Meanwhile, Nick and Jason examine the outside of the temple when they are attacked by a reanimated Joey, who turned into one of the creatures. The trio are trying to fix the radio to call for air support (which will work if Merwin is alive) when they are attacked yet again by Dar, who kills Merwin and possibly Eric during the shootout. Eric reunites with the arriving Jason and Nick, after which the trio goes back in the temple. Exploring the building, the boys hear Joey screaming in the caves and go there only to be ambushed by Dar.

In the game's timeline, it was the site of the crash-landing of a spaceship that carried thousands of large, bat-like aliens, which were controlled by a parasite that gestates within the host's body. The disease caused the aliens to mutate into vampires vulnerable to ultraviolet light; they had been hibernating underground for millennia, occasionally venturing to the surface to feed on their victims' adrenaline. The prologue takes place in 2231 BC, as a Gutian army prepares to invade the capital Akkad and a solar eclipse allows the vampires beneath the temple to emerge. Following the prologue, the game cuts to a library owned by the Curator, who introduces himself to the player and provides information about parts of House of Ashes' gameplay, including the decision-making system and the pictures system.

During a post-credits epilogue, the located protagonists are transported to Camp Slayer, where the survivors are interviewed.[d] The US military, planning to cover up the entire incident, begins analyzing the vampires. Little Hope, the second Dark Pictures Anthology game, was a railroad that led towards a very limited set of endings. House of Ashes is much more flexible, offering a variety of fates for your characters. In Man of Medan, the first entry, I took pride in getting our seafaring party out alive in a Shared Story.

Sure enough, while playing as Eric, I found myself faced with the choice of whether or not to use white phosphorus as a weapon. On September 22[11] and October 14[12], an exclusive two-part interview with main actress Ashley Tisdale, was released. In them, Ashley talked about what it was like to play Rachel and talked about the personality of her character. In anticipation of House of Ashes, Supermassive Games created the "Caelus Files" site[9], which allowed the reader to learn more about the game's lore. This demo allowed the players to not only play the shown 7-minute gameplay chapter, but also other additional three new chapters. Players were also able to play as each protagonist and even kill Merwin and Eric.

At first they successfully confront the swarm, but as The Ancient One, who is an infected Balathu/Kurum, joins the fight, the squad is quickly wiped out. The battle ends with Dar and Clarice dying (the latter meets Joey's fate and also becomes one of the creatures), the King spouses possibly dying as well, and the other protagonists fleeing. The footage showcases the US military unit who, after coming under fire from Iraqi forces in the Zagros mountains, finds themselves trapped in an ancient Sumerian temple buried beneath the desert. Ashley Tisdale plays C.I.A operative Rachel King, who is an abrasive character with some personal ties to other characters in the game. The survivors find a gigantic nest of hibernating vampires in the spaceship and destroy it. They escape to the surface to await recovery by a rescue team, but a total solar eclipse allows the creatures to attack the group before help arrives.
Players can play alone, in co-op with another online or offline, or with up to four friends offline; in the case of multiplayer, you and your friends will get the opportunity to select the characters you control. Zaydun Khalaf is an actor that has appeared in a number of shorts over the years with House of Ashes being his first major role in a video game. Previously he had been credited as a voice actor in Total War Rome II and appeared as Emir’s Aide in Wonder Woman 1984. Previous roles that you might recognize him from include playing Aiden Miller in Transplant and James Dean in Future Man. Pip Torrens plays The Curator, the storyteller, and narrator of the events in House of Ashes. He has appeared in all of the Dark Pictures Anthology games and serves as their connective tissue.

I'm obsessed with the CIA, and so I was very excited to play a character [like Rachel] because I haven't gotten to do that on TV or movies yet ... For me I've always wanted to do an action film, and I am living out my action dreams [acting for the game] because, yes, it is scary, but there's so much action adventure in it, and it's pretty cool—it's pretty wild ... Everyone's really cool; I mean, we all have so much fun and we kind of are just like here kind of killing it. Eric arrives at Camp Slayer in Baghdad along with his assistant, Clarice, to brief a team of Force Recon Marines led by Rachel about a mission to raid a village in the desert. He tells them that there may be a facility underneath the village hiding chemical weapons. Meanwhile, Salim returns home and searches for his son, but his commanding officer, Dar Basri, forces Salim to intercept Eric's raid, headed by Jason.

Supporting Characters
The second act drags a little, and I think it’s because the American characters are a little more one-dimensional, and focusing on them takes up valuable real estate for more ancient cult intrigue or deep character connections. Jason and Nick, for instance, could probably be merged into one character to make room for another Iraqi. It features a copy of the game and a pre-order bonus with a vampire figurine, stickers, an eclipse pin, and an art print. The player meets with the Curator for the last time, where he comments on their ending and the number of survivors.
House of Ashes, the newest entry in the Dark Pictures Anthology, delivers that kind of terror in spades. It unleashes creatures like a mummified, sprinting Akkadian priest alongside a zombie-bug version of a former friend. The game manages to pull off some spectacular horror set pieces in its short runtime, and it deploys some truly audacious writing in the process. The first glimpse of the third installment in the anthology appeared in Little Hope's gold picture showing a woman (Rachel) rappelling into a chasm and screaming frantically as the rope holding her snapped. Moreover, as the credits end, the announcement trailer[4] is shown, revealing the identities and voices of some of the protagonists.
The reveal began with an interview with Will Doyle, who briefly talked about the inspirations, setting, new mechanics, protagonists and threats, which since Man of Medan and Little Hope, were real. The gameplay itself was 8-minutes long and took place in one of the early chapters. In it, in addition to the already familiar Nick and Jason, the viewer was introduced to two new supporting characters, Clarice and Merwin. The role of lead character was taken by actress Ashley Tisdale, who gave her voice and likeness to Rachel. According to Tisdale, she accepted the role not only because she could portray a tough personality but simultaneously be able to show a soft side[3], but because she could expand her career experiences outside of her usual roles in comedy.

The creatures were made using motion capture and hand animation, and the temple's design was inspired by ancient Mesopotamian architecture. Military specialists and Arabic speakers were consulted to ensure a faithful depiction of the war. We choose what the character we are controlling says and does at the time, and we do our best to keep them alive when quick-time events pop up.
Reappearing in House of Ashes are staple mechanics of The Dark Pictures Anthology, such as quick time events (QTEs), two single-player and two multiplayer modes, and collectibles that allow players to see visions of possible future events. New features include a more interactive camera system, a handheld light source for easier navigation, and three difficulty levels to manage QTEs. P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness and the myth of the Curse of Akkad were the main influences for the game.
“The Simpsons,” bu the way, has been no stranger to killing off characters over the years — Maude Flanders, Frank Grimes, Mona Simpson and Edna Krabappel among them. The Volume 2 Edition is a collection bundle featuring copies of both House of Ashes and The Devil in Me and a pre-order bonus with House of Ashes playing cards, the hotel's island map, and pins (eclipse and drawing compass). Compared with Little Hope, House of Ashes sold 27% fewer physical copies in the United Kingdom upon its debut. The game entered the UK boxed charts at number six, with 48% of boxed sales coming from PS5 users. The PS4 and Xbox versions made up 36% and 16% of physical sales at the time, respectively[19]. House of Ashes dropped to number 21 on the week of 30 October, denoting a 52% decrease in sales[20].
Salim suggests they unite to fight the monsters, to which the others reluctantly agree. The vampires attack again in the catacombs, separating everyone and killing Dar. Nick, and possibly Rachel and Eric, follow and learn about the vampires' origin.
